Police say a man who had just robbed a bank in Maine ran across four lanes of traffic and a restaurant parking lot before slipping on ice and dropping his gun and the money in front of a state police special agent.

Waterville police said a lone male armed with a handgun robbed Bangor Savings Bank on Upper Main Street shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday. The suspect fled the bank with an undetermined amount of cash, running across Main Street and into the parking lot of Ming Lee's Restaurant.

While running, the suspect, later identified as 37-year-old Jason Mackenrodt, slipped on the ice and fell, spilling the cash and gun from his jacket pocket onto the pavement.

The cash was swept up by the wind and blown across the parking lot, where members of the public quickly scooped it up.

Mackenrodt fell right in front of Maine State Police Special Agent Glen Lang, who was sitting in his car.  Lang had no idea a bank had just been robbed, but he was suspicious enough to get out of his car and tackle Mackenrodt as he tried to flee.

Police said Mackenrodt was handcuffed and hauled off to jail.

The weapon turned out to be a BB gun.

"Fortunately Special Agent Lang was in the right place at the right time and was able to safely take Mackenrodt into custody without further incident," Waterville Police Chief Joseph Massey said.

Mackenrodt was charged with robbery and terrorizing. He was out on probation for a previous burglary. He is being held on $25,000 bail at the Kennebec County jail pending a court appearance.
