Vermont College to Sell Artwork to Fund Scholarship Program

Bennington College in Vermont will auction off works of art from its collection to help fund a new scholarship program.

Vermont Public Radio reports the school plans to sell five pieces at Christie's to support its Art for Access scholarship. Bennington College President Mariko Silver says the scholarships helps "increase access" to students who wouldn't be able to afford an education at the private college.

One of the pieces being auctioned off is an abstract work by painter Helen Frankenthaler, a Bennington College graduate. It is expected to sell for at least $3 million. Other works on the auction block include paintings by Mexican artist Diego Rivera and French artist Julian Dupre.

The college hopes the sale will encourage donors to support the scholarship program.
