Vermont Reminds Hunters of Rules on Deer, Elk Importation

The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department is reminding hunters of the state's restrictions on the importation of deer and elk from states and Canadian provinces that have had chronic wasting disease.

Canadian officials recently confirmed the first positive case in a captive deer herd in Quebec.

The department says wildlife officials are monitoring the potential for movement of deer across the border from Quebec, where the fatal neurological disease was found about 100 miles from Vermont.

In Vermont, it's illegal to possess deer or elk, or parts of the animals from states and Canadian provinces that have had the disease or captive hunt or farm facilities with exceptions including if the meat is boneless or cut up, packaged and labeled and not mixed with other deer or elk during processing.
