A former Massachusetts police officer convicted of sexually assaulting an intoxicated man in protective custody inside a police station closet has reached a settlement with the victim.

The Salem News reports 58-year-old Brian Butler was found guilty of indecent assault and battery and cleared of a rape charge.

The victim later filed a civil suit alleging Butler and the city of Salem violated his civil rights. Lawyers for the victim, city and Butler told the judge the case had been settled last week.

The alleged assault occurred Oct. 31, 2016, at the Salem police station. The victim reportedly told investigators he felt compelled to go along with Butler.

Lawyers representing the city and Butler did not respond to requests for comment.
