A violent felon with 31 prior charges in Massachusetts assaulted two Yarmouth police officers over the weekend while being arrested for walking in the roadway and "challenging vehicles."

Jared Adkins, 35, of Hyannis is facing charges of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and assault and battery on a police officer. He was also wanted on a warrant out of Arkansas.

He had to be hit with a stun gun twice prior to being taken into custody.

Yarmouth police said the incident started when they received a report around 6:30 p.m. Sunday of a man walking in the middle of the road and "challenging vehicles." When they arrived, officers found Adkins walking on Route 28. He wasn't wearing any shoes and had cuts on his feet and forehead.

[NATL] New Study Says Beards are 'Dirtier' Than Dogs

A recent study suggests that a man's beard contains more germs than a dog's fur. All 18 men's beards studied by researchers at Switzerland's Hirslanden Clinic had higher levels of bacteria in them, compared to only 23 out of 30 dogs. Some beards had so much beard bacteria the men could get sick, the study says.

Despite attempts to communicate with him, the officers said Adkins did nothing but "scream nonsense." He also took off both of his shirts and then put one of them back on and began walking in the middle of busy Route 28, forcing traffic to come to a sudden stop.

Officers then attempted to place Adkins under arrest. He immediately pulled away and began to swing his arms around uncontrollably, striking both officers in the head with his arms and elbows.

The officers brought Adkins to the ground, but he continued to struggle, so they used a stun gun on him. It was unsuccessful, and he continued to fight with the officers.

Another officer arrived at the scene and a stun gun was again deployed, but was again unsuccessful in subduing Adkins.

The officers were eventually able to gain control of him and he was placed into handcuffs and transported to the Yarmouth police station.

Two of the officers involved in the arrest sustained cuts and scrapes to their arms, hands and knees.

Adkins was held overnight on $500 bail and was scheduled to be arraigned on Monday in Barnstable District Court.
