Volunteers Work to Save Troubled Ski Resort

The Lost Valley ski resort took another step toward an unexpected opening this winter.

The Auburn, Maine, resort, which first opened in 1961, announced in June that it was in financial trouble and would likely not reopen this winter.

In response, a group called Friends of Lost Valley got together and raised more than $25,000.

Dozens of volunteers went into action Sunday to clear brush from trails, repair equipment and spruce up the grounds and buildings for the new season.

Resort co-owner Connie King says the problem was inefficiency. She says the business is looking at ways to become more efficient, including the installation of compact fluorescent lamp light bulbs in the lodge to save on energy costs. The resort will also not open on Mondays this season to save money.
