Vt. I-91 Bridge to Be Replaced This Weekend

The bridge at Exit 11 will close Friday Aug. 28 at 6 p.m.

The Vermont Agency of Transportation plans to replace an Interstate 91 bridge in White River Junction in one weekend using an innovative technique to minimize the impact on drivers.

The slide-in construction method will be used to replace the northbound bridge this weekend. It originally had been scheduled for last weekend.

The bridge at Exit 11 will close Friday Aug. 28 at 6 p.m. Hydraulic jacks will slide the bridge 18 inches at a time. The new bridge is expected to open by 6 a.m. on Monday Aug. 31.

Agency Secretary Sue Minter says the technique substantially reduces the amount of inconvenience to travelers by limiting closure.

The $11.1 million project is mostly covered by federal funding. Vermont will pay 5 percent of the cost.
