A Vermont man is going to prison for 30-years-to-life for the 2017 killing of an 81-year-old Arlington woman in her home.

The Bennington Banner reports 34-year-old Timothy Butler pleaded guilty in April to second degree murder in the stabbing death of Helen Jones.

In sentencing Butler on Friday Superior Court Judge William Cohen said Butler "made significant choices'' the night of Jones' death, "all of which were bad."

Prosecutors say Butler was carrying a 6-inch knife when he broke into Jones' home where he had previously worked doing odd jobs.

A young Ohio woman broke down in tears when she was cleared of murder charges involving the death of her newborn child. A jury cleared Brooke Skylar Richardson, 20, of aggravated murder, involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment charges of a baby she had given birth to and buried in the family's backyard.

Bennington County State's Attorney Erica Marthage said Butler stabbed Jones more than a dozen times, "to prevent her from implicating him in a burglary."

During the hearing Butler said he was "truly sorry" for his actions.
