Legendary Boston television and radio anchor Gary LaPierre died Monday at the age of 76, according to his former colleagues at WBZ NewsRadio.

LaPierre, who was recently diagnosed with leukemia, passed away at his home surrounded by his family, according to WBZ NewsRadio's Director of Operations Bill Flaherty.

LaPierre started out in the mailroom of WBZ in the 1960s then worked his way up to a general assignment reporter. He then anchored broadcasts for WBZ-TV before heading to WBZ NewsRadio, where he retired from his full-time duties in 2006.

LaPierre received dozens of awards over the years, including the national 1998 Edward R. Murrow award for Best Radio Newscast and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the March of Dimes Achievement in Radio Organization in 1997. He was inducted into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2010.
