Former Gov. Backs Mayor Hopeful in Conn. Against Ganim

Former Gov. Lowell Weicker has endorsed Mary-Jane Foster for Bridgeport mayor in the race against former Mayor Joe Ganim, a convicted felon.

Weicker told the Connecticut Post Friday (http://bit.ly/1OdmHf2 ) that the "idea of electing a real felon, that's not Bridgeport."

A spokesman for the Ganim campaign did not immediately return a call seeking comment. Ganim defeated Foster and Mayor Bill Finch in the Sept. 16 Democratic primary.

Foster, who calls herself an independent Democrat, said she is honored to receive Weicker's backing.

Weicker was an independent as governor and a Republican representing Connecticut in the U.S. Senate. He said he cannot believe Democrats nominated Ganim despite "so many good people" in Connecticut's largest city.

The 55-year-old Ganim was mayor from 1991 until he resigned in 2003 after being convicted of receiving kickbacks.
