Authorities in Massachusetts are investigating after a gun and ammunition was found in a bag in a popular park across the street from a high school.

Wellesley police said a resident was walking a dog in the Hunnewell Field area along the "Crosstown Trail" near Rice Street on Wednesday afternoon when the dog located a bag, and the resident opened it, finding a firearm and ammunition inside.

Federal investigators have been informed about the discovery, since the firearm isn't registered in Massachusetts, according to police.

Although the gun isn't believed to be connected to anyone at the high school, there will be extra patrols in the area on Thursday as a safety precaution.
