Wet Weather Ahead With Rain Coming Our Way

We have a mostly dry Friday in store and although there will be less sunshine and it will be cooler than Thursday, it’s not going to be a bad day to work or play outdoors.

A weak front eased into northern New England Thursday night, and is slowly settling south Friday morning. The result is thickening clouds, and more seasonable temperatures, closer to 60 and 70 degrees.

There’s not much in the way of wind, but a light breeze from the northwest will come around from the east during the afternoon, with temperatures cooling a bit more before the sun goes down.

We expect a wave of low pressure to develop on the front in New York, with a batch of rain developing and spreading in to Central New England as it gets dark in the evening.

A period of rain, with fog and drizzle, is likely from about 6 p.m. through 3 a.m. for much of central New England. Up to a quarter of an inch of rainfall as possible, but it looks mostly dry on the south coast and far northern New England. Temperatures overnight will be in the 30s north and 40s south.

High pressure from Canada brings in drier air Saturday, with a few hours of sunshine, but clouds will return late in the day as we track a powerful storm coming out of the deep South. That storm generated thunder snow in the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles Thursday, but the snow part of the storm is done.

There’s also a developing tropical cyclone in the Gulf of Mexico. The two systems are likely to combine with a significant slug of rain and thunderstorms coming out of the Mississippi Valley and Appalachian chain Saturday, then into New England Sunday. High temperatures then will be mostly in the 50s, with a few spots at 60 degrees, not too much in the way of wind.

We may start off dry in eastern New England Sunday, but clouds will thicken with fog and drizzle. Steady rain develops in Western New England first and spreads east by the afternoon.

Where it is raining, we will have a tough time getting out of the 40s. The Patriots game looks chilly with a temperature in the lower 50s.

Wind may become a factor as the high pressure from the east tightens the gradient with low pressure to the west. We may have southeasterly winds gusting past 30 mph by late in the day.

Rain with a thunderstorm near the south coast is possible Sunday night, but Monday shows a little more hope for sunshine in much of eastern and southern New England.

Looks like a low layer of clouds and chilly breeze from the north may keep us in the 40s and 50s again with some light rain or showers continuing near the coast. The best chance of any sunshine on Monday is in western New England. Thereafter, the weather pattern changes little since we’re going to have a lot of moisture around with waves of energy coming up from the south, showers or even more periods of rain or likely off and on Tuesday, Wednesday, and into Halloween. Temperatures holding mostly in the 50s.

We may see drying by trick-or-treat time on Halloween, or that may wait till Friday. The jury is still out, so stay ahead of the weather here with our First Alert 10-Day Forecast.
