Lawsuit: Wholesale Owner Embezzled $1.5 Million in Lobsters

A Maine lobster wholesaler is suing one of its owners, claiming he embezzled nearly $1.5 million worth of lobsters.

Sea Salt, which is a Saco-based restaurant and wholesale lobster company, alleges Matthew Bellerose created a sham customer who received thousands of dollars' worth of lobsters without being billed. The Portland Press Herald reports the lawsuit claims the lobsters were then resold.

Sea Salt claims the damages may actually exceed $2 million, as they are still investigating the loss.

Bellerose was fired in June and the other owners contend he admitted to embezzling money. Bellerose declined to comment Wednesday on the lawsuit.

The lawsuit alleges fraud and multiple other charges. Sea Salt is seeking damages of at least $1.4 million.
