The last day of April felt a bit like the first to many people in Vermont, who woke up to snow — wondering if it was some sort of late April Fool's Day prank from Mother Nature.
"I looked out the window and thought, 'What the heck, you've got to be kidding me — tomorrow's the first day of May,'" said Hannah Morgan of Plainfield.
From just a trace at the state capital of Montpelier, to six or more inches in some spots at higher elevations, like in Plainfield, the heavy, wet snow clung to branches and cars.
The Munevar family was visiting the Cabot Creamery on vacation from Indiana, sampling its famous cheddar cheese.
"I was not expecting six inches of snow," Tonya Munevar said. "The Midwest doesn't get as much snow as you. I'll take this little bit of snow versus what you're used to seeing. I don't think I could've handled it if we got feet of snow!"
At the Vermont Flower Farm in Marshfield, owner George Africa's potted blueberries and other plants were peeking out from the snow.
Africa said he stayed on top of clearing snow from his greenhouse, to avoid damage from its weight.

Africa was not complaining about the weather, though, because he said he has seen winter return even later than this.
"The first year we were here — we always open on Mother's Day — it snowed that day so bad you could hardly see from the road to where we're standing right now, so you never know," Africa recalled.
The spring snow won't last, long, though. It was melting quickly Monday, and a warmup is on its way for Vermont this week.
"It'll be here soon," Africa said of warmer weather.
