Witness: Driver Run Over by Own Van After Slipping in Rain

According to the witness, the driver stepped out to see what had been hit, then slipped on the rainy ground

The driver of a van was run over by his own vehicle Friday night in Winthrop, Massachusetts, after a witness says he slipped in the rain.

Police responded around 6 p.m. to Woodside Avenue, where they say a 61-year-old Winthrop man had suffered a serious leg injury. At the scene, a large white van was behind police tape against the sign for Webster First Federal Credit Union.

The man was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening, Winthrop Police said. Investigators believe the man was accidentally hit by the van when he was exiting it.

A witness told NBC10 Boston that the man was trying to back up the driveway between the credit union and CVS when the van ran the curb. According to the witness, the driver stepped out to see what he had hit, then slipped on the rainy ground before the van rolled over his leg.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
