Woman Accused of Killing Son, Burning Connecticut Home Formally Charged

A woman accused of suffocating her 8-year-old son before using tiki torch oil to set her Connecticut home on fire has been formally charged.

Police say Karin Ziolkowski is now in custody of Meriden police as of Tuesday night after she waived extradition to Connecticut from North Carolina. Ziolkowski has been charged with murder and second-degree arson. She has a court hearing scheduled for Wednesday morning.

The woman and her son, Elijah, were pulled from the burning home in November 2016. Authorities say the boy died from homicidal asphyxia before the fire was set at their Meriden home.

Ziolkowski was arrested Oct. 13 in North Carolina, where she's now living. She is being held in lieu of a $1 million bond.
