Woman Falls Off Church Steeple in Rockport

A 26-year-old woman was injured when she fell from a church steeple in Rockport, Massachusetts, on Friday morning, according to police.

The woman was working on the church steeple at the First Congregational Church at 12 School St. - 70 feet in the air - when she fell about six feet off a ladder, according to police.

"She was going to step down on the bell deck level where I was and fell," said Geof Lyon, who was on the roof with an engineer inspecting the project.

Rockport firefighters, most of whom are volunteers, rushed to the scene to rescue the woman, extending large ladders from their truck and then carrying her down from the roof of the church.

The woman was taken to Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester. She was treated for bruises suffered in the fall and has since been released.

Rev. Derek Vangulden said work has been taking place on the steeple since the week before Easter.

"We came out and blessed this on Easter Day and we pray every day for the steeplejacks, who we've gotten to know really well," he said.
