A Massachusetts woman has been ordered to repay $1.8 million and spend six months in prison for her role in a tax fraud scheme.
Thirty-five-year-old Claudia Toribio, of Charlestown, was sentenced in Boston federal court on Monday after pleading guilty to one count of theft of public money in March.
Prosecutors say Toribio cashed 287 fraudulent tax refund checks totaling more than $1.8 million while working at a check-cashing business in 2011.
It was part of a scheme that used stolen identities to collect fraudulent tax refunds.
Toribio was also sentenced to three years of supervised release after prison.
Her lawyer, Christopher Belezos, said in an interview that "the court made a good decision after considering all of the factors, and we are pleased with the outcome of the case."
