Worcester Bakery Closing After Nearly 90 Years in Business

Mrs. Mack's Bakery has been a favorite place for breakfast and baked goods in Worcester, Massachusetts, for nearly 90 years, but it's closing its doors July 1.

"It's a unique place. It's always been a unique place," said Grainne McAvey, the third-generation owner and operator.

The original Mrs. Mack opened the bakery in 1929, finding a market for great cakes, pies and their signature blondie brownie during the Great Depression.

Business has increased since the closing was announced, but that was never a problem.

The well-loved business is closing because of health problems. Grainne had a stroke last year. Her husband was diagnosed with terminal cancer recently.

But despite the hard times, the McAvey family is remaining joyful during the last days.

McAvey says she just hopes people remember their service, family atmosphere and of course the blondie brownies.

"They were the best brownies ever," said McAvey with a laugh.
