Deputy Fire Chief Aaron Collette identified the material as hydrochloric acid

Fire officials say a YMCA in Burlington, Vermont, has been evacuated in bitter cold temperatures due to a chemical spill.

The Burlington Free Press reports Deputy Fire Chief Aaron Collette identified the material as hydrochloric acid. He said Friday morning the children in the building were moved to a building annex.

It wasn't clear how the spill happened or if anyone was hurt. The number of people in the building wasn't known.

Temperatures hovered close to zero downtown Friday morning with below-zero wind chills.
