Murder Victim's Heart Gives Mass. Man a New Life

(NECN) - A Massachusetts man is living life to the fullest after being given a second chance.

Mark Harrington received his first heart transplant on April 3, 1991 at Brigham and Women's Hospital. That same day Gabriel Gonzalez, Jr. was born at the hospital. Both are from Lawrence, Massachusetts.

Fast-forward 18 years to June 28, 2009 and both men are back at the same hospital, again for two very different reasons.

Harrington was there for his second heart transplant. Gonzalez, a known gang member, was the victim of a gunshot wound to the head.

Soon a decision changed the life of Mark Harrington and his family forever.

Today, Gabriel Gonzalez's mother, along with Mark Harrington and his family attended a rally at Lowell City Hall.
