New Test Links Piirainen Murder to Dead Springfield Man

(NECN: Greg Wayland, Springfield, Mass.) - Holly Piirainen disappeared from her grandparents' house in Sturbridge, Mass. in 1993. Her body was found in a wooded area five miles from the home in Brimfield three months later.

The case had been cold until Tuesday, when authorities announced that a new test had linked Piirainen's disappearance to a man from Springfield.

Hampden District Attorney Mark Mastroianni said that a piece of evidence recovered from nearby where Piirainen's body was found lead them to David Pouliot, who is now deceased.

“The nature of the item suggests that either Mr. Pouliot, or people associated with him, were in this immediate area at a time relevant to Holly’s disappearance and the finding of her remains,’’ Mastroianni said.

Mastroianni stressed that Pouliot is not being considered a suspect.

Officials are now asking the public for their help in identifying why Pouliot may have been in the area.
