Police ID Lowell, Mass. Drowning Victim

(NECN) - Police have released the name of the boy believed to have drowned in an indoor swimming pool in Lowell, Mass.

The Lowell City Manager says the teen whose body was discovered inside the pool at Lowell High School is Eddie Gayyean.

Investigators believe the 16-year-old Lowell boy entered the pool area on Monday afternoon.

He was found dead in the water sometime around 5:30 p.m. by the coach of a private swim club that rented the pool for the evening.

"It's understandable why he'd be in the school building. The issue is why he was in the pool area and what he was doing there. How he got in there. Those are all questions we're trying to understand at this time," City Manager Bernie Lynch said.

The school district has been cooperating with the Lowell Police Department as the investigation continues. Investigators have been reviewing surveillance video from the pool area.

An autopsy was expected to be performed on the teen.

At last check, police did not suspect foul play in Gayyean's death.
