New Lawrence, Mass. Mayor: We're Going to Be Bold

Former city councilor was sworn in as mayor of Lawrence, Mass. on Saturday morning (Published Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014)

(NECN: Katelyn Tivnan, Lawrence, Mass.) - During a ceremony at his former high school, Daniel Rivera became the new mayor of Lawrence, Mass.

"It's just a joy to have this great opportunity to lead our community," said Rivera. "We set out to do something really good, and make our city better, and I think that we've gotten that opportunity."

Rivera told the packed crowd his goals as mayor.

Plans include adding more police officers, hiring new police and fire chiefs, and adding jobs.

But the road to City Hall was a long one.

Rivera won the contested race against former Mayor William Lantigua following a recount, taking the lead by 81 votes.

The change in mayor also comes after Lantigua's term was plagued by several state and federal investigations into his administration, including the indictment of two associates.

Supporters at Saturday's event say they are eager to see what Rivera will bring to the table.

The celebrations for the new mayor will continue Sunday with free public ice skating and a concert, but all celebrations aside, Rivera says he has a big agenda set and he is eager to get to work at it starting Monday.
