ELECTION RESULTS: Boston City Council Seat, Mayoral Races Highlight Election Day

Voters in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine and Connecticut headed to the polls

Tuesday was Election Day for dozens of communities across New England, with more than 50 mayoral races and a highly-anticipated contest for a Boston City Council seat.

In the Boston city council race, 33-year-old Andrea Joy Campbell, an attorney from Mattapan, challenged longtime City Councilor Charles Yancey for District Four. Campbell came out on top.

Campbell won all-but seven of the district's 32 precincts last time around.

Both Yancey and Stephen Murphy were the longest serving members on the city council. But Tuesday, Murphy conceded defeat to Annissa George.

Elsewhere in Massachusetts, there were mayoral elections on tap in nearly 30 communities, including Worcester, Springfield, Quincy, Chicopee and Weymouth, where state Sen. Robert Hedlund was challenging incumbent Mayor Susan Kay.

In Worcester, incumbent Mayor Joseph Petty defeated challengers Michael Gaffney and William Coleman.

Chicopee Mayor Richard Koss beat out Michael Bissonette by 4,000 votes.

In Fall River, Mayor Sam Sutter lost to 23-year-old City Councilor Jasiel Corriea.

There was also a spirited race to succeed the late Democratic state Sen. Thomas Kennedy of Brockton. Gov. Charlie Baker has campaigned on behalf of Republican state Rep. Geoff Diehl of Whitman. He was opposed and defeated by Democratic Rep. Michael Brady of Brockton. Independent Anna Raduc was also on the ballot.

In New Hampshire, there were a dozen mayoral contests, including Nashua and Manchester, where incumbent Mayor Ted Gatsas faced a challenge from Joyce Craig. Gatsas ultimately won a fourth term in office by a slim 75 votes.

In Nashua, Jim Donchess won the election, replacing outgoing Mayor Donnalee Lozeau.

In Maine, there were five mayoral races, including contests in Biddeford, Lewiston and Portland, where incumbent Mayor Michael Brennan was challenged by Tom MacMillan and Ethan Strimling, with Strimling coming out on top.

There were also two contested state House races and three statewide ballot questions, and Portland voters decided on a proposed increase to the minimum wage.

Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap said he received reports that someone was videotaping voters as they signed petitions in polling places on Tuesday, raising concerns over voter intimidation.

In Connecticut, there were eight mayoral races, including ones in New Haven, Hartford and Bridgeport, where former Mayor Joe Ganim successfully got his old job back after spending seven years in prison for corruption. He was opposed by University of Bridgeport administrator Mary-Jane Foster and five other candidates.

Democrat Luke Bronin defeated a field of three challengers in a landslide to win the race to lead Hartford.

One polling location in Hartford opened late on Election Day after a moderator overslept, according to the Secretary of State's Office. Some voters left, while others stayed and waited in line until it opened.
