Rhode Island Lawmaker Says Comments on Syrian Camps Taken Out of Context

Republican Sen. Elaine Morgan said she was speaking only about fanatical and extremist Muslim groups

A Rhode Island state lawmaker says an email she wrote suggesting Syrian refugees be put into camps was taken out of context.

Republican Sen. Elaine Morgan of Hopkinton also wrote in the email this week that "the Muslim religion and philosophy is to murder, rape and decapitate" non-Muslims.

In a statement Friday, Morgan said she was responding to a constituent and was speaking only about fanatical and extremist Muslim groups.

She said that when she suggested the U.S. set up a "refugee camp to keep them segregated" from American citizens should the country take in refugees, she was referring to establishing a federal immigration center, not a refugee camp.

When asked to clarify, Morgan suggested "a safe zone set up by the United Nations somewhere near their own country."
