House Democrats are delaying an effort to punish Maine Gov. Paul LePage for alleged abuse of power, delaying a showdown and starting the session on a conciliatory tone.
House Speaker Mark Eves said fellow Democrats agreed to focus Wednesday on priorities like addressing the drug crisis and creating jobs. Lawmakers who want to rebuke LePage for pressuring Good Will-Hinckley to rescind a job offer to Eves will have to wait. Eves said to "stay tuned."
House Democratic leader Jeff McCabe said lawmakers plan to vote to restore expired Land for Maine's Future bonds. The governor released $5 million in bonds, but the expired bonds amount to another $6.5 million.
Lawmakers sought to dial back tension a day after talk of impeachment swept the Statehouse. LePage said to "bring it on."
