Romney Endorses Fung for RI Governor

Allan Fung's campaign announced the endorsement from the 2012 Republican presidential candidate Tuesday

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has endorsed Cranston, Rhode Island, Mayor Allan Fung in the Republican race for Rhode Island governor.

Fung's campaign announced the endorsement from the 2012 Republican presidential candidate Tuesday, a week before the Sept. 9 primary. Romney touted Fung for leading financial reforms and job creation in Cranston.

Fung and Barrington businessman Ken Block are vying for the GOP nomination. The two are set to debate Tuesday evening at the Providence Performing Arts Center in an event sponsored by WPRI-TV and The Providence Journal.

Block was expected to be endorsed Tuesday by John Robitaille (ROH'-bih-tie), the 2010 Republican candidate for Rhode Island governor.

The Democratic primary contest features state Treasurer Gina Raimondo, Providence Mayor Angel Taveras and newcomer Clay Pell.

Democratic Gov. Lincoln Chafee isn't seeking re-election.
