Broadside: Mass. AG on Boston Strangler's Last Victim

(NECN) - Mass. Attorney Martha Coakley was among the law enforcement officials announcing a break in the 1964 murder case of Mary Sullivan by using DNA evidence.

Investigators say they used DNA from a water bottle they collected from the nephew of Albert DeSalvo, who confessed to a string of murders. His remains are set to be exhumed Friday.

Sullivan is thought to be the final victim of the Boston Strangler.

Coakley says had the attacks happened these days, when convicted of a violent felony, DeSalvo's DNA would be entered into a database. DeSalvo was convicted of rape, later on confessing to the murders.

"The issue really was that those confessions were not admissible for a variety of reasons, so there was no real good evidence on the murders," she says.
