Broadside: Could Crimea Annexation Trigger Cold War 2?

(NECN) - Russian President Vladimir Putin annexed Crimea into Russia Tuesday.

Putin addressed Russians, telling them the region was "coming home" from Ukraine.

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden asserted that Russia's actions are in violation of international law.

The question hanging over Biden, President Obama and European leaders is whether sanctions will do anything to deter Russia and Putin.

Oxana Shevel, an associate professor in the Tufts University Department of Political Science, joined Jim Braude on Broadside to discuss the impact of Russia's actions on the world.

Shevel has been monitoring the situation closely. She has family in Kiev.

"We have a violation of international law, and since Putin sort of seems to be acting unpredictably, the question is, where would it end?" said Shevel. "He could potentially not even stop in Eastern Ukraine."
