Deval Patrick Proposes Reforms in Mass. Compounding Industry

(NECN) - Gov. Deval Patrick held a news conference on Friday afternoon to announce a proposal for new reforms to strengthen oversight of the compounding pharmacy industry.

He said that in light of the NECC scandal and the meningitis outbreak that stemmed from it, reforms are necessary. The board has responsibility for oversight of all pharmacy operations across Massachusetts, and the meningitis outbreak showed that the board hasn't been able to keep up with the industry's rapid evolution.

Patrick proposed that the legislature change the governing statues to reform the board of pharmacy and its functions. The bill would include more members from outside the industry to bring a "greater range of professional perspective to the board."
