(NECN/NBC News: Steve Handelsman) - President Obama is pressing Congress to pass the most comprehensive set of gun control measures in U.S. history, and the National Rifle Association fired back with a video that even some gun enthusiasts say crosses the line.
The president himself admits this will be a tough fight, but he promised to use the weight of his office to get done what he called "the right thing".
Using executive orders, President Obama made more data available for background checks and restarted research into gun violence.
Signing those executive orders is the easy part.
The rest requires congress.
The president is pushing for a new ban on sales of assault weapons and magazines of more than 10 rounds, along with mandatory background checks on all gun buyers, with no more waivers for gun shows.
"If there's even one life that can be saved, then we've got an obligation to try!" Mr. Obama said.
Politics
In the Senate some Republicans might support banning large magazines.
"If you talk about the ten rounds there's some merit to this thing," Oklahoma's Senator James Inhofe said.
The National Rifle Association charged the Obama plan attacks firearms, and made the fight personal by putting up a new ad about Mr. Obama and his daughters stating "Are the president's kids more important than yours? Then why is he skeptical about putting armed security in our schools when his kids are protected by armed guards at their schools?".
The president called on responsible gun owners to join the fight, on his side.
House Speaker John Boehner signaled he's in no rush for new legislation, saying only that the House will look at what the president has proposed.
