Polls Open as Voters Decide on Mohegan Sun's Proposed Casino at Suffolk Downs

(NECN: Justin Michaels, Revere, Mass.) – Voters in Revere, Mass. will head to the polls Tuesday to decide if they should welcome one of the state's three casinos.

Polls opened in Revere at 7:00 a.m. and the people will vote again on whether or not the city of 50,000 wants a casino.

The $1.3 billion proposed deal has strong support on both sides of the debate.

One resident said, “I think it will be great for the city, businesses, jobs.  I think it's a great thing."

Another resident said, "I think it's a really bad idea. I think it's going to, I think it's going to bring to watch traffic to the city and I think it's going to bring the type of people we don't want around here."

"We know there's going to be an increase in traffic, increase in crime, increase in addiction and also, we don't trust a corporation like Mohegan Sun coming into Revere promising all of these things that aren't in their contract, like a high school. There's nothing in their contract about that and we don't trust the corporation who's a billion dollars in debt to actually deliver on any of the promises they've made," Joseph Catricala with the group "Don't Gamble on Revere" said.

"We could certainly use the jobs, not to mention the 800 to 1,000 jobs that currently exist at Suffolk Downs, so in addition to trying to create jobs here, we're trying to save 800 to 1,000 jobs at what is now New England's only remaining thoroughbred race track. A very, very important day for the city of Revere," Mayor Dan Rizzo said.

Revere voters said "yes" to the project last fall by nearly 60 percent and voters in East Boston said "no." Suffolk Downs then joined forces with Mohegan Sun to alter the plan and relocate the casino entirely onto the Revere side of the property. That alteration was successful and now requires another vote.

The Revere proposal at Suffolk Downs is one of two looking to get the state's sole casino permit for Greater Boston.

The other is Wynn Resorts, which is looking to build in neighboring Everett.
