Collins, King Split on Bill Approving Keystone Pipeline

Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins and independent Sen. Angus King are split on their views of the Keystone XL oil pipeline

Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins and independent Sen. Angus King are split on their views of the Keystone XL oil pipeline.

Collins voted Thursday in support of the bill, which President Barack Obama has threatened to veto.

She says in a statement that it's "past time" for Obama to approve the project. She says she'd rather the country receive oil from Canada than "from unstable nations in the Middle East."

King, who voted against the bill, says the country's focus should be on growing renewable energy sources. He says adding jobs in green energy industries, like solar, will be more beneficial to the American people.

The bill would authorize construction of the nearly 1,200-mile pipeline to carry oil primarily from Canada's tar sands to refineries on the Gulf of Mexico
