Newcomer Magaziner Wins Democratic Primary For RI Treasurer

The 31-year-old investment professional has defeated former general treasurer Frank Caprio

Political newcomer Seth Magaziner (mag-a-ZEE'-ner) has won the Democratic nomination for Rhode Island general treasurer.

The 31-year-old investment professional defeated former general treasurer Frank Caprio in Tuesday's primary after Caprio conceded.

Magaziner made the state's struggling economy central to his campaign. He promised to bring a fresh perspective to state government and use the treasurer's office to promote economic growth. He wants to invest in infrastructure and in energy-efficient projects and invest more of the state's pension money locally.

Former President Bill Clinton backed Magaziner and praised his economic plan.

Magaziner most recently worked as a vice president at the investment firm Trillium Asset Management.

He faces former state Auditor General Ernie Almonte, who is running as an independent in the Nov. 4 general election. No Republican filed to run.
