MBTA Officer Injured in Marathon Bombings Honored at TD Garden

(NECN: Josh Brogadir, Boston) - Officer Richard Donohue’s first night away from the hospital or rehab since mid-April couldn't be any sweeter.

Transit police officer Richard Donohue, shot in the thigh by a bullet that severed his femoral artery in a shootout with the alleged marathon bombers in Watertown, is also a lifelong Bruins fan.

And now he is on ice, waving the flag, cheering on his Bruins - a great honor for a man well worthy of such distinction.

"Since I was a kid, you take the commuter rail in from Winchester right to the old North station. You come right up the stairs and you go to the B's game," Donohue said.

The Bruins honored Donohue, waving the flag alongside his wife Kim, before Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals as a fan banner captain.

He soaked in the moment, the welcome diversion, because his recovery has been anything but easy.

"I was hoping to go home a couple of days ago, but that didn't happen. I still have significant pain in my foot and we're trying to get to the root cause of that," Donohue said.

Donohue and MIT Police officer Sean Collier were friends, classmates at the academy.

"I have Sean's memorial with me and I don't think there's a day that goes by that Dic and I don't talk about Sean or think about Sean. So he's always going to be with us and we're always going to be talking about him, and he's always going to be part of our family," Kim Donohue said.

And what would be even sweeter for Donohue would be another Bruins march to the Stanley Cup.
