Mayor Donald Grebien says Pawtucket, Rhode Island, should be compensated by the state if the Pawtucket Red Sox leave town.

Grebien told WJAR-TV on Friday that he still hopes to keep the Triple-A baseball club in his city, but expects the state to help maintain McCoy Stadium if the team moves.

Grebien says the city is not in a position to improve the stadium. It was built in 1942 and renovated in the late 90s.

Boston Red Sox president Larry Lucchino and a group of Rhode Island businessmen announced Monday they had purchased the team for an undisclosed amount and will likely move it out of Pawtucket. They have said they would use private funds to build a ballpark in Providence but would seek support from the state.
