Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia will be placed on the 10-day injured list after feeling pain and irritation in his left knee, effective Thursday.

Pedroia, 35, started the season on the IL with inflammation in his left knee. He had surgery on the knee after the 2017 season and was limited to just three games in 2018.

The veteran second baseman appeared in six games after being reinstated from the IL for Boston's home opener at Fenway Park on April 9. He left Wednesday's game in the second inning.

Pedroia's roster spot will be taken by Marcus Walden, who was called up from Pawtucket for Friday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Pedroia has meant a lot to the Red Sox over the course of his career, being named American League Rookie of the Year in 2007 and American League MVP in 2008. In total, he has batted .299 with 140 home runs and 138 stolen bases.

With Pedroia having played in just nine games since the 2017, his future in baseball is being called into question. John Tomase of NBC Sports Boston wrote Thursday that Pedroia looks like he's finished.
