Best of MLB: Porcello tosses 4-hitter for major league-high 21st win

Red Sox pitcher Rick Porcello has won the American League Cy Young Award.

Porcello won 22 games and lost just four in 2016, pitching to a 3.15 ERA over 223 innings and leading the MLB with a 5.91 strikeout to walk ratio.

The righty is the first Red Sox pitcher to win the award since Pedro Martinez.

It was a major turnaround season for Porcello, who was criticized heavily in 2015, when he pitched to a 4.92 ERA. Boston had acquired him in a trade that sent slugger Yoenis Cespedes to the Detroit Tigers and subsequently locked him up on a four-year contract extension worth $82.5 million.

Porcello responded with a dominant year, especially in the second half, when he allowed just 0.845 baserunners per inning.

In 2016, Porcello set career highs in starts, wins, ERA, innings pitched, strikeouts, walks and opponent batting average.

    Porcello is signed through 2019.
