Tech CEOs Support Apple in Fight Over San Bernardino iPhone Decryption

Tech CEOs are backing Apple in its refusal to obey a federal judge's order to unlock an iPhone belonging to San Bernardino shooter Syed Farook, NBC News reports.

Sundar Pichai, chief executive of Google, tweeted his support for Apple CEO Tim Cook, who posted an open letter Tuesday night arguing that helping the FBI decrypt Farook's iPhone would open the floodgates for possible future privacy violations and government surveillance.

Jan Koum, CEO of messaging service Whatsapp and Facebook board member, wrote on the social media site, "We must not allow this dangerous precedent to be set. Today our freedom and our liberty is at stake."

A judge has ordered Apple to disable a feature that wipes iPhone data after successive failed password attempts.

"Forcing companies to enable hacking could compromise users' privacy," Picahi tweeted Wednesday.
