New Mountain Lion Report Renews Debate in Maine

Scarborough Police alerted the Maine Warden Service about the sighting

A sighting of a large cat that a Scarborough resident says could be a mountain lion or a bobcat is rekindling a debate about whether mountain lions live in Maine.

The Portland Press Herald says the Scarborough police have notified the Maine Warden Service about the sighting. The resident took a photograph of the animal wandering through her backyard on Sept. 26. Police later got a copy of the picture.

Whether mountain lions, also called cougars, live in Maine is a source of ongoing debate. Bobcats do live in Maine and are the subject of a hunting season in the state that begins on Dec. 1.

The woman who took the picture of the animal says she has not let her child go outside the house since the sighting.
