A Boston woman has been convicted of performing buttock and lip injections with a substance intended only for external uses and without a medical license.
Valentina Perez Tavarez pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court to charges of "receipt in interstate commerce of a misbranded device and the proffered delivery thereof for pay."
Prosecutors say the 37-year-old woman charged up to $700 per buttock and carried out the surgery at least 10 times in her Dorchester home.
Authorities say she had been sent a product from Colombia that said on the bottle in Spanish that it was a massage oil intended for external skin application. It contained a substance often used as a sealant or in food.
She faces a year in prison at sentencing scheduled for Dec. 9.
