Service on MBTA Red Line trains was partially suspended due to police activity at Andrew Station Friday, the agency said. Shuttle buses replaced trains between Park Street and JFK/UMass for about an hour starting about 12:30 p.m.

Following an extensive investigation, MBTA officials now say a broken axle is to blame for a derailment on the Red Line back in June.

Passengers reported seeing smoke and fire on a Red Line train at Andrew Station on Tuesday afternoon. The MBTA said on Twitter that there is a mechanical problem on a train at Andrew Station and that northbound Red Line trains may experience “a gap in service.”

Huge crowds were trying to board busses outside the Broadway T stop as crews continued to make repairs following the Red Line derailment Wednesday morning.
