Free Hurricane Preparedness Workshop

As we move deeper into the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, it's important to stay prepared for potential storm activity in New England.

On Monday, July 20, the National Weather Service will host a free hurricane preparedness workshop. Members of the public will learn not only how to prepare for hurricanes, but also how to respond to hurricanes when they hit.

The event will be held at Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island from 7-9 p.m. Seating is limited to 150 people, so register here to confirm your attendance.

The workshop will include speakers from the National Weather Service, American Red Cross, National Grid and the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency.

Even though the last landfalling New England hurricane was Bob in 1991, the region around Narragansett and Buzzards Bay is particularly vulnerable to storm damage. In 1938, for example, a tremendous storm surge flooded downtown Providence as a hurricane slammed into Long Island.
