Glorious Days Ahead

Drought Monitor finally had some good news today. Southeastern Massachusetts, with its 2-3 inches of rain on Sunday (compliments of Matthew's watery nudge) was able to move up one full category: from extreme to severe drought.

OK, it's not much, but with the prospect of a wetter week ahead after this weekend, we could put more dents in this epic 3-year drought.

In the meantime, we're steeped in autumn. Highs will have a hard time making it to 60 in the coming days. The lucky few should be from the valleys of Connecticut to the cranberry bogs of Southeast Mass. Hard freeze is expected Saturday morning, finishing off the growing season for the suburban towns that escaped Tuesday morning's freeze.

The turnaround on Sunday afternoon is stunning. Southwest winds will turn those near 60 highs on Saturday back near 70 on Sunday afternoon. Tailgating at Gillette and any fall activities are a solid go...in t-shirts.

Next week, we hinted at a change in the pattern. It seems that while timing and extent of the rain will remain difficult, we seem to be on the right track with warmer temperatures through the entire period. It's likely we may tip the scales at 70 or better a few times...with balmy overnight lows in the 50s.
