Maine National Guard Deploys to Massachusetts for Snow Removal

Fifty soldiers from Maine have volunteered to go to Massachusetts to help remove piles of snow built up in the Bay State following a series of big storms.

Maine's National Guard was activated as part of the Emergency Management Assistance Compact and will join soldiers from Vermont, who arrived in Massachusetts Thursday.

The group from Maine's 133rd Engineer Batallion are also bringing 40 pieces of equipment, including bucket loaders and dump trucks. They will spend two weeks in Massachusetts removing snow from cities and towns around Boston.

These soldiers are more familiar with construction projects but feel ready to handle snow removal duties.

"It's not a whole lot different than removing dirt from the earth, a little softer, a little easier to manage," said Staff Sgt. Dennis Troxell.

Troxell admits he's a bit worried about navigating Boston's narrow streets with big pieces of equipment, but when the call went out for help, he didn't hesitate to sign up.

The Maine soldiers will have plenty of work to do, with yet another big snow storm headed to New England this weekend.
