Schools Stay Closed as Snow Keeps Piling

With National Guard crews from much of the Northeast helping to alleviate snow issues in Massachusetts, some cities and towns are keeping their schools closed as a precaution.

As heavy snow sits atop buildings, school officials cite safety concerns in making the cancellations.

Somerville announced that its schools would not reopen this week, explaining that engineers had determined the buildings would be unsafe for students.

Quincy made a similar announcement.

"While these snow removal efforts continue, all Quincy Public Schools will remain closed on both Thursday, February 12 and Friday, February 13 and through the February vacation week," the superintendent said in a statement. "All Quincy Public Schools will re-open on Monday, February 23."

Weymouth, meanwhile, closed the school on Thursday and will hold a professional development day on Friday, meaning only teachers, not students, should attend school.
