Floods Swamp Roads in Southern, Western Maine

(NECN: Amy Sinclair, Yarmouth, Maine.) Nearly a hundred roads across southern and western maine were under water today because of  record rainfalls and river flooding.

Emergency crews had their hands full rescuing people from rising flood waters.

It started raining here in Maine early Saturday morning and it's been coming down...at varying degrees of intensity..ever since. Two and a half days of rain----more than seven inches of water...is simply more than
the state's major rivers can handle.

The rain-fueled Androscoggin brought out spectators and waterbirds, but for those who live beside it, the rising river also brought out anxiety..

"We're watching ... when it gets to a certain point we're going to have to go up the hill or we won't be able to get out of the house. We're just watching and praying." said a resident.

Across Androscoggin County, dozens of low lying roads were shut down, some were washed out entirely.
