Heat Waves End With Thunderstorms

Extreme heat blew through New England Friday July 19th, wind from the southwest gusted past 30 mph with temperatures near 100F.
Records highs were set in..
Boston MA, 99 beat 98 from 1982
Burlington VT, 98 beat 94 from 1977, 1946, & 1942
Portland ME, 95 beat 94 from 1982.
Other Cities missed record highs
Worcester MA,  93 fell short of 95 from 1991.
Warwick RI, 98 fell short of 100 in 1977.
Windsor Locks CT, 97 fell short of 100 in 1991.
On Mount Washington, 64 missed 70 from 1943.

Saturday July 20, 2013 is day 7 of a Heat Wave for much of New England. This is the last day, and as is the case with most heat waves, this one ends with severe thunder storms.
Timing the storms is difficult.
Our weather model is not much help.
Here is the forecast map for 3:30 pm, it shows a broken line of storms from Maine to New York.

In my opinion, these graphics are underestimating the strength and magnitude of Saturday storms, but the timing looks good.
Sunday brings much lower humidity and cooler air that lasts into next week.

Sunday July 21st Update.

July 20, 2013 image from space shows four unique lines of convection, so instead of one massive exploding front, we had four less massive exploding fronts (so to speak)

GOES20152013201zvPfLR.jpg

The storms were not as widespread as usual for such intense Heat Wave killing cold front, but they were a bit more hefty that the forecast graphics indicated on Friday.
Here are some of the impacts.

Jeff Simpson of the Norwell MA Fire Department tweeted this pic of a lightning fire from Saturday.

...SUMMARY...
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN CARIBOU ME HAS CONFIRMED A
TORNADO NEAR DANFORTH IN WASHINGTON COUNTY MAINE ON JULY
17 2013.

A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WITH DAMAGING WINDS OF 60 TO 70 MPH DOWNED
NUMEROUS TREES AND POWER LINES IN THE AREA FROM NEAR WESTON TO
DANFORTH. THE STORM PRODUCED A BRIEF EF-0 TORNADO APPROXIMATELY 1
MILE NORTHWEST OF DANFORTH...DESTROYING A METAL SHED.

Our seven day Heat Wave July 14-20, 2013 rivals some impressive heat going back several decades here in New England.
The hot weather at Burlington Vermont rivals some of the records from 1944. Also, as Mike Iacono & Bob Skilling of Blue Hill reports, we rivaled 1944 in southern New England too.
This is another alarming analog to the summer of 1944, when one of the strongest hurricanes in the last century ran up the east coast of the United States.. Just Sayin'

Here is The Blue Hill Data for the heat this July, and where it ranks.

HEAT WAVE FINALLY ENDS

After 6 days of 90+ degree heat, the heat wave has ended today as the
temperature has only climbed to 81F by 2 PM EDT this afternoon, and is
unlikely to rise much further.  The humidity has also come down somewhat
today, giving the air a more pleasant feel than it has had over the past
several days.  Winds have been very light for the most part, with a
persistent eastward component that has kept the air coming in from the
ocean, preventing a major rise in temperature.  The sky has been mostly
cloudy today, with a combination of altocumulus, cirrus, and cumulus that
have been forming and building this afternoon.  No precipitation fell at
the summit yesterday, though thunder and lightning were observed from
thunderstorms that moved to our south.

The recent heat wave lasted six days at the Observatory.  A total of 6
records, all highest minimum temperature, were tied or broken.  For three
consecutive days, July 18-20, the temperature at 7 AM EST was 80F or higher.
Although higher temperatures have been recorded at this time of day in
recent years, this may be the first occurrence on record of three straight
days of 80F or higher at that time of day in records checked back about 50
years.  In addition, this month has so far seen 10 days with a high
temperature of 90F or higher, which is among the greatest number of such
days for any month on the entire period of record.
