Threat for Damaging Wind Late Thursday Evening and Thursday Night

A potent storm moving through the Plains States touched off multiple tornadoes and hail the size of grapefruits Wednesday evening.  This storm will cross New England late Thursday evening and Thursday night, and should deliver the following:

  • Rain develops from west to east, Thursday afternoon to evening, respectively.
  • Embedded thunderstorms develop in the shield of rain, gradually becoming stronger toward 7 PM, especially in Connecticut.
  • These stronger embedded storms will spread east within the broad rain shield as the evening progresses, moving into Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts, perhaps as far north as the Massachusetts Turnpike, and producing scattered damaging wind.  The potential exists for storms to grow quite strong as the evening progresses.
  • Meanwhile, heavy rain will set up shop in most of Central and Northern New England, with heaviest rainfall amounts of approximately one inch of rain likely to set up from Central and Southern Vermont to Central/Southern New Hampshire and Southern Maine, even though the threat for severe weather is much less in these locales.
  • A broken line of thunderstorms is likely to develop from west to east in Southern New England between 10 PM and 2 AM, delivering scattered wind gusts between 60 and 70 mph that will cause damage beneath the strongest storms.
  • Drier air will move in gradually on Friday, eventually giving way to a nice weekend.

A full technical analysis of the forecast can be found on my personal Weather Analysis Page.  I also posted pictures of Wednesday evening's hail from Kansas on my Facebook Page.

Stay tuned to NECN for updates as the heavy weather moves in Thursday evening.
